Every problem you encounter in calligraphy can be traced back to an untrained eye.
If you do not see what you are doing wrong, you will never know what to work on.
Suitable for students of all skill levels, this monthly subscription course meets twice a month on Zoom with the specific goal of continuous eye training so you can identify errors in your work, learn how to study, and see new ways of harmonizing script with flourishes.
In each 1.5 hr meeting, I will spend 30-40 minutes analyzing script from archives and show you what I see, and how I would study and extract information from the piece.
In the remaining time, I will critique the work I choose from student submissions. You may ask me to critique your submission anonymously. A calligrapher's education should not stop and rely on one or two courses per year. This course is my way of offering an opportunity for ongoing education for those of us who love pointed-pen.
All Zoom meetings will be recorded and available here for 2 days after the meeting.
The first meeting will be on August 1st, 10am EDT.
After your purchase, please DO NOT opt out of emails so you can get details and link for the Zoom lesson.
If you are already a student at Connie Chen Academy and have previously opted out of emails, please change the setting in your profile so you can receive the link for Zoom lessons .
FAQs
Q: What scripts do I need to know for the course?
A: I will focus on pointed-pen analysis for both Spencerian and Engrosser's Script but you do not need to know how to execute both scripts. The goal is for you to gain the skills to look at script with a sharper eye.
Q: I am a modern calligrapher. Will this course be suitable for me?
A: Yes. This course will help you see the relationships between letterforms that you can apply to your own style.
Q: When will the remaining Zoom meetings be held?
A: For August, 2020: August 1st & August 15th at 10AM EDT. Depending on the group we have and everyone's availability, I may consider changing it if this isn't a time that works for most people. But the lesson will be recorded and available here for 2 days if you cannot make the meeting.
Q: I am nervous about submitting work to be critiqued. Is there an option to not submit work?
A: I am open to critiquing your work anonymously. But I would encourage you to think about critique as a way of learning not a way of judgment.
